They left in the early hours of the waking day
Unsure, frightened and doubting.
There were no followers
cheering from the side - (Go Wise Men!)
Only their camels and the wind
and that Star
They were not freaks excited about their purpose
they had a precise uncompromising commitment
to their destiny.
Nothing arbitrary, nothing whimsical
(oh, we can change, always change our minds)
No. A journey under that Star
They felt their individual stars
Aligned with that Great Star.
They had a choice, and they had no choice.
And they would have arrived
Strangers in a strange land
bearing gifts
Broken with joy and longing
They must have been roused
to an unspoken intensity - terrifying
And in witnessing a Birth
They witnessed their own Death
a new dispensation
With absolute precision they were
bound to the New Law.
